Looking for something adventurous to do this summer but not sure where to start? Destinations Unplugged has you covered! We have compiled a list of 8 summer activities in India that range from relaxing and peaceful to pulse racing and adrenaline pumping.
India is comprised of breathtaking mountain ranges, beautiful beaches and fast flowing rivers, all of which serve as the perfect canvas for our country-wide suggested activities.
1. Surfing in Varkala, Kerala
Adventure Scale: 8.5/10
Once thought to be reserved to the beaches of Australia and Hawaii, Surfing is steadily growing in prominence and popularity in India. While there are a number of popular surf spots across the Indian coast line, we recommend Varkala in Kerala.
Varkala has the rare distinction of being one of Kerala’s last untouched beaches. White sand beaches and rippling waves make for the perfect surfing destination.
Right for you if: You are comfortable in the water and aren’t afraid of tumbling over with a few waves. Believe us the knock downs are worth the thrill of riding your first wave!
DU Tip: Make sure to do your research and book ahead with an experienced surf school. We recommend Soul and Surf, who combine surfing and yoga for a truly magical experience.
2. River Rafting in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand
Adventure Scale: 9/10
Man vs. nature at its finest. Located at the foothills of the Himalayas, Rishikesh remains the most popular spot for white water rafting in India. Rafting through the thundering rapids of the Ganges is a one of a kind experience that should not be missed. Summer is considered an especially popular time for true adventurists, as the snow melts from the Himalayas, resulting in swifter rapids for rafting.
Right for you if: You are looking for a real adrenaline rush. Nothing quite like riding the ebbs and flows of the ganga rapids.
DU Tip: More the merrier, try to create a group of at least 5-6 people when planning your trip to Rishikesh. River Rafting is a true bonding experience for a group of friends or family.
3. Cycling in Munnar, Kerala
Adventure Scale: 7/10
There really is no better way to experience a scenic destination like Munnar than on a bicycle. Planned routes and trails take you through orange and apple orchards, past sandalwood and sugarcane farms and across the lush tea plantations famous to Kerala. It is a work out with a great pay off.
Right for you if: You are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and get your legs working with scenic and traffic-free cycling routes.
DU Tip: The cycling paths in Munnar, while scenic can be challenging in parts, especially when going uphill. Make sure you have the stamina to sustain these semi-lengthy rides.
4. Paddle Boarding in Kovalam, Kerala
Adventure Scale: 5.5/10
Never heard of paddle boarding before? Think of it as a much simpler version of surfing. You stand on what looks like a conventional surfboard and propel yourself forward with a paddle. Kovalam provides serene waters and a beautiful backdrop to test out your balance on the relatively stable paddle board.
Right for you if: You are in search of a hassle-free outdoor activity that is enjoyable without necessarily getting your pulse racing.
DU Tip: Paddle boarding is a mixture of strength and balance. To get the most out of this full body workout, make sure you get your balance and positioning right on shore before taking your paddle board out on the water.
5. Diving in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands
With Summer at its peak, it’s time to venture to tropical islands for an adventure under the sea. To see stunning corals and marine life, travel no further than the Andaman & Nicobar Islands – one of the top locations on our diving bucket list.
Right for you if: You are a true water baby! It’s no small feat getting to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, but the marine life in the islands ecosystem makes the journey worthwhile.
DU Tip: Many of the diving programs in Andaman claim ‘no swimming experience required’, however we only advise you to take on scuba diving if you can at least dog paddle and stay afloat. Safety first!
6. Kayaking in Dandeli, Uttarakhand
Adventure Scale: 5/10
Flowing into Uttarakhand from Nepal, kayaking along the Kali River offers you a terrific experience, discovering lush jungles with rich wildlife and various levels of rapids ideal for both beginners and for those with a bit of experience kayaking.
Right for you if: You are in the mood for something adventurous yet safe. Kayaking can be extremely relaxing and allows you to truly take in the beautiful scenery around you.
DU Tip: Only take on the more challenging rapids if you are an experienced swimmer and have had experience kayaking in the past.
7. Trekking in Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir
Adventure Scale: 8/10
Trekking in beautiful Ladakh is one of the best ways to explore the Himalayan region. While they say it isn’t for the faint hearted, we believe there’s something for everyone. Get your heart racing and your camera clicking with any of these treks: Markha valley trek, Stok Kanghri trek and Padum to Darcha trek. If you are truly adventurous (and experienced) – Chadar could be the trekking path for you.
Right for you if: You are looking for a trek with a view. Ladakh’s relatively untouched landscape serves as the ideal setting for a challenging yet fulfilling trekking experience.
